My Story
My Family
Maria is the fourth of six children and grew up in a Catonsville family that valued education and hard work. Her grandfather, founder of Palladi Construction Company, was a homebuilder whose company was known for its quality construction and its excellent treatment of employees and customers.

Her mother graduated from Notre Dame College in Baltimore with a degree in Mathematics. She went on to pass the CPA exam in 1951 and worked in the accounting field for many years. Her father, a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic High School and a WWII veteran, attended law school at night in the 1960s in order to better provide for his family.

Maria attended UMBC for two years where she also played lacrosse and field hockey before transferring to West Virginia University and earning a bachelor’s degree in Forest Resource Management. Before starting her career with the Maryland Department of the Environment, Maria held positions with the Bureau of Land Management in Grand Junction, Colorado and the Forestry Division of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. To help supplement her income in those early years, Maria went back to school to become a tax preparer and worked for H&R Block part-time for nine years. She then enrolled in graduate school at the University of Maryland, earning a Master’s Degree in Public Policy in 1997.

During her career at MDE, Maria worked throughout the state and in a variety of specialties from water and wastewater treatment to lead paint remediation to stormwater management. She was a field inspector, supervisor, and public health investigator, and ultimately a water resource engineer in the stormwater program. In this role she worked with Carroll County on resolving the stormwater management fee (rain tax) in a manner acceptable to all concerned.

Maria and her husband Bill Warburton, married in 1984, purchased land in Carroll and built a house in 1988. Their sons, Michael and David were born and raised in Westminster. Throughout the years, Maria has been active in the school system, coached youth soccer and basketball teams, served on a Carroll County Master Plan subcommittee and as her church’s treasurer, and volunteered with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, including as a cub scout committee chairperson for several years.

Maria and Bill passed down the dual importance of education and hard work to their sons. Michael graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland with a double major in math and physics and is currently a software engineer working in Washington D.C. David earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics and an MBA from Loyola University Maryland and is working for a brokerage firm in Baltimore. Both played club soccer at a high level and went on to play for their college team for four years. Maria continues to be involved in our community, including as an active member of the GFWC Junior Woman’s Club of Westminster, volunteering at the Westminster Cold Weather Shelter and as certified tax preparer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at the Human Services Programs of Carroll County. In her spare time, Maria enjoys outdoor activities and is working towards becoming a competent bridge player thanks to lessons the past couple years from her 92 year old mom.
